Updated for 2026 travel planning

How much data do I need for China? As a practical starting point, allow 1–3GB for a light short trip, about 5–10GB for regular use over 7–14 days, or choose a daily or Unlimited plan if video calls, streaming, cloud uploads or hotspot use are part of the trip.

Quick answer: For 7 days, start with 1–3GB for light use or about 5GB for regular maps, messaging, browsing and photo uploads. For 10–14 days, about 5–10GB is a practical regular-use range. Choose a larger Total pool, Standard Daily or Unlimited when video calls, streaming, cloud backup or hotspot use will be frequent. Total can be recharged before or after the included data is used; Daily and Unlimited cannot.

How much data do you need for 7, 10 or 14 days in China?

Light use

Maps, messages and payments

Choose a small Total plan when you avoid video and keep backups off. Total data is one fixed pool and stops when used.

Regular use

Social feeds and photo uploads

Choose a larger Total pool or Standard Daily plan. Standard provides 2GB or 3GB high speed each day, then up to 384Kbps.

Heavy use

Calls, streaming and hotspot

Consider Unlimited or a large Total plan. Unlimited provides 1GB high speed each day, then up to 5Mbps.

Daily high-speed allowances reset at midnight in China local time. That rule applies to Standard Daily and Unlimited; it is not the same as Total plan validity, which runs in 24-hour blocks from activation. All current Ezigo mainland China plans support hotspot sharing, but connected devices use the same allowance.

Estimate your China travel data usage by activity

Infographic grouping China travel activities into light, regular and heavy mobile data use
Maps and messages are light; video, cloud backup and hotspot traffic can change the calculation quickly.

Public estimates vary by device, app version, media quality and background activity. Use these ranges for planning rather than billing-grade measurement.

ActivityApproximate planning rangeWhat changes the result
Maps and navigationAbout 3–15MB/hourSatellite view, repeated searches and live imagery.
Text messagingUsually very lowPhotos, voice notes and automatic media downloads.
WhatsApp voice callsRoughly 20–60MB/hourConnection quality and call conditions.
Music streamingRoughly 40–150MB/hourAudio quality setting.
Social feedsRoughly 100–600MB/hourReels, Stories, autoplay video and uploads.
Video callsRoughly 300MB–1.5GB/hourResolution, group calls and screen sharing.
Video streamingRoughly 0.5–4GB/hourSD, HD and 4K quality.
Hotspot, backup and updatesPotentially several GBLaptop updates, cloud drives and photo libraries.
Practical takeaway: Maps, payment QR codes and text messages are rarely the main risk. Autoplay video, high-resolution uploads, video meetings, cloud photo sync and laptop traffic are what turn a light-use trip into a heavy-use trip.

Fixed, daily or unlimited data: which plan should you choose?

China Mobile

Total data

One fixed pool for the validity period. If the included data is used, service stops until you recharge or choose another plan. Recharge can be purchased at any time, adds data, extends validity and keeps the original ICCID. View mainland China Total plans.

Standard Daily

2GB or 3GB high speed each day, then up to 384Kbps until midnight China time.

Best fitPeople who want a fixed budget, flexible consumption or the option to recharge.Users who need more high-speed data each day and can tolerate 384Kbps afterward.Users who want continued service after 1GB/day, with a 5Mbps fallback.

Do not mix up these two clocks: if a Daily or Unlimited plan is activated at 16:09, its next high-speed reset is at midnight China time. A one-day Total plan activated at 16:09 instead runs for the next 24 hours. Recharge is separate again: it adds data and extends the Total plan while keeping the original ICCID.

“Unlimited” means continued data—not unlimited full-speed data. Most modern phones can store several eSIM profiles, often eight to ten or more, although the number that can remain active at once depends on the device. If a Total plan runs out, you can recharge it through your account or ICCID lookup; if you prefer a new allowance, you can also purchase another suitable plan and select it in the cellular or SIM manager.

Mainland China only, or China plus Hong Kong and Macao?

Choose coverage before comparing gigabytes. The mainland-only China eSIM does not cover Hong Kong or Macao. If your itinerary includes Guangzhou, Shenzhen or another mainland stop plus Hong Kong and Macao, use the separate China, Hong Kong and Macao eSIM instead of assuming a mainland profile will continue working after the border crossing.

China eSIM mobile data vs local Wi-Fi for Google and WhatsApp

A China travel eSIM gives your phone a cellular data connection; it is not the same thing as joining hotel, café or venue Wi-Fi. Ezigo’s mainland China product page lists Google Search, Gmail, Google Maps, WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook, YouTube, WeChat, Alipay and DiDi as supported services without requiring a separate VPN, although app, account, device and local-network conditions can still affect the result.

For travelers who need Google Maps, WhatsApp messages, ride-hailing or payment apps while moving between airports, hotels, meeting venues and attractions, mobile data is the more dependable baseline because it does not depend on finding a Wi-Fi network or completing a local Wi-Fi login. Use local Wi-Fi as a supplement, not as the only connection you plan around.

Check the mainland China eSIM options if you only visit mainland China. If Hong Kong or Macao is also on the route, use the tri-region product linked above.

Is 1GB per day enough in China?

For many travelers, yes. One gigabyte per day is usually enough for navigation, messaging, payment apps, email, searches, ride-hailing, translation and some social media. It becomes restrictive when you add long video calls, frequent Reels or YouTube, high-resolution uploads, cloud backup or laptop hotspot use.

Ezigo Unlimited does not cut off after the first 1GB: service continues at up to 5Mbps until the next midnight reset. If your needs are mostly light tasks, however, a cheaper Total plan may offer better value—and Total also gives you the option to recharge and extend validity if your usage changes.

When should you choose 2GB or 3GB per day?

A 2GB Standard Daily plan suits travelers who use maps throughout the day, upload photos, browse social media and make occasional calls. Choose 3GB per day when video, frequent uploads or work apps are part of the itinerary.

Compare the fallback speed: Standard slows to up to 384Kbps after its daily allowance; Unlimited continues at up to 5Mbps after 1GB. The larger headline allowance is not automatically the better experience.

Hotspot and laptop use can change the answer

All current Ezigo China plans support hotspot sharing, but a laptop can use data far faster than a phone. System updates, cloud drives, browser tabs and video meetings can consume several gigabytes without an obvious warning.

If hotspot use is essential, pause automatic updates and backups, set the laptop connection as metered, and read the detailed China eSIM hotspot guide before choosing a small Total plan. Total is the only current plan type here that supports recharge; Standard Daily and Unlimited continue according to their reduced-speed rules but cannot be topped up.

Decision shortcut: For a short laptop session, a Total plan can be economical if you monitor the pool. For repeated work calls, large files or a full workday, choose enough daily high-speed data or Unlimited’s 5Mbps fallback instead of assuming “hotspot supported” means “unlimited full-speed hotspot.”

Travelling with colleagues or family? Buy multiple eSIMs in one order

One eSIM profile should be assigned to one traveler or one primary device. If people will split up, buy separate profiles; if everyone stays together, one person can share a hotspot, but every connected device still consumes the same plan allowance.

Separate profiles for separate travelers

Add multiple China eSIMs to one order and pay once. The delivery email contains separate installation QR codes and ICCIDs. Label each profile before departure so the right person scans the right QR code—each QR code is intended for one scan.

One profile for a shared hotspot

This can work for a group that stays together, but the hotspot uses the same allowance and can drain a small Total pool quickly. For a group that needs independent maps, messaging or ride-hailing, separate eSIMs are usually the more resilient setup.

How to use less mobile data in China

Before-you-fly checklist for reducing mobile data use during a China trip
Prepare offline content and device settings before departure so essential travel tasks keep priority.
  1. Download offline maps, language packs, tickets and hotel addresses over Wi-Fi.
  2. Update travel, payment and authentication apps before departure.
  3. Pause cloud photo backup, automatic app updates and podcast downloads.
  4. Enable Low Data Mode on iPhone or Data Saver on Android.
  5. Disable high-quality video and autoplay in social apps.
  6. Set laptops and tablets to a metered connection before using a hotspot.
  7. Reset or record cellular-data statistics when the trip starts so you can monitor real usage.

Frequently asked questions

How much data do I need for seven days in China?

Light users may manage with 1–3GB total. Regular users should consider a larger Total plan or a 2GB/3GB Standard Daily plan. Frequent video callers, streamers and hotspot users may prefer Unlimited.

How much data do I need for ten days in China?

Three gigabytes can cover essential maps, messaging and bookings when media use is limited. Choose a daily plan or larger fixed pool if you upload photos, use social media frequently or make video calls.

How much data do I need for fourteen days in China?

Light users who limit video and automatic uploads may manage with about 3GB. For regular maps, messaging, browsing and photo uploads, 5–10GB is a more practical starting range. Choose a larger fixed pool, a daily plan or Unlimited if you expect video calls, streaming, cloud backup or hotspot use.

Is 1GB per day enough for Google Maps and WhatsApp?

Usually, yes, if most activity is navigation, text messaging and occasional images. Calls, automatic media downloads and social video can increase usage substantially. Third-party app availability can also vary; see the guide to WhatsApp and mobile connectivity in China.

What happens when a Total plan runs out?

The data connection stops until you add more data. Total plans can be recharged before or after the included allowance is used. Recharge adds data, extends validity and keeps the original ICCID, so you do not need to wait until the pool is empty.

What happens when Standard Daily data is used?

After the 2GB or 3GB daily high-speed allowance is used, service continues at up to 384Kbps until midnight China time.

What happens when Unlimited high-speed data is used?

After 1GB of daily high-speed data, service continues at up to 5Mbps until midnight China time.

Can I use a China eSIM as a hotspot?

Yes. All current Ezigo mainland China plans support hotspot sharing, and hotspot traffic counts against the same allowance. Total stops when its pool is used until recharged; Standard Daily continues at up to 384Kbps after 2GB or 3GB/day; Unlimited continues at up to 5Mbps after 1GB/day. Daily and Unlimited cannot be recharged.

Can I top up an Ezigo China eSIM?

Total plans support recharge. Log in to view the order details and follow the recharge instructions, or use ICCID lookup after signing in to match the eSIM and recharge it. Recharge adds data, extends validity and keeps the original ICCID. Standard Daily and Unlimited plans do not support recharge.

Do Daily and Unlimited data reset 24 hours after activation?

No. Their daily high-speed allowance resets at midnight China local time. Total plan validity is different: it runs in 24-hour blocks from activation.

Can I buy several China eSIMs in one order?

Yes. You can add multiple China eSIMs to one purchase. The delivery email contains separate installation QR codes and ICCIDs, so label each profile and assign it to the correct traveler. Each QR code is intended for one scan.

Does a mainland China eSIM cover Hong Kong and Macao?

The mainland-only product does not cover Hong Kong or Macao. If your itinerary includes all three areas, choose the separate China, Hong Kong and Macao eSIM.
