CHINA TRAVEL eSIM GUIDE

Can you use eSIM in China? Yes. Can I use eSIM in China as a tourist? Usually, yes, if you choose an international travel eSIM that covers mainland China, your phone is eSIM-compatible and unlocked, and you install the eSIM before arrival. This guide explains the difference between local carrier eSIMs and international travel eSIMs, VPN access, app availability, setup, plan limits and Ezigo China eSIM options.

Can I use eSIM in China? What tourists need to know

Yes. For most international visitors, the practical option is an international travel eSIM purchased online before departure. You install it over stable Wi-Fi, keep it ready on your phone, and select it for mobile data after you arrive in mainland China.

Your phone normally needs to support eSIM and be carrier-unlocked. You should also check the plan’s coverage, network route, activation timing, hotspot policy and what happens when the included data is used.

01

Install before arrival

Use stable Wi-Fi before your flight. Installing the profile before departure is especially important if you have an iPhone with China mainland installation restrictions.

02

Separate eSIM from VPN

An eSIM is a digital SIM profile, not a VPN. Some travel eSIMs use international roaming routes that may support common international services without a separate VPN.

03

Check the plan rules

Compare total data, daily high-speed data, reset time, post-cap speed, network, validity and hotspot support before you buy.

What type of eSIM works in mainland China?

“China eSIM” can describe two different products. Understanding the difference prevents a common mistake: assuming that a local carrier eSIM and an international travel eSIM have the same activation process.

eSIM typeHow it is obtainedWhat travelers should know
International travel eSIMPurchased online and installed by QR code or manual activation detailsDesigned for visitors who need mobile data after landing. Install it before departure and follow the selected plan’s activation instructions.
Mainland carrier eSIMActivated through a local carrier processDevice model, carrier, store visit and identity-check requirements may apply. It is not the same product as a visitor travel eSIM.
Before buying: confirm that your phone supports eSIM, is not carrier-locked, has room for another cellular plan and can connect to Wi-Fi during installation.

Which country or region should you select for a China eSIM?

Choose a plan whose coverage explicitly includes mainland China. Do not assume that a Hong Kong-only, Singapore-only or other regional eSIM will work in mainland China unless the provider lists mainland China in the coverage area.

Simple rule: If your trip is only to Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Shenzhen or other mainland destinations, choose mainland China coverage. If your itinerary also includes Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan or other Asian destinations, choose a regional plan that explicitly includes every place you will visit.

The country or region shown during checkout identifies the plan’s coverage and routing. It does not mean that your phone must be purchased in that country. Check the coverage list, validity period, network partners and data-routing description before buying.

If you are combining mainland China with several Asian destinations, you can also review the Ezigo Asia 20 Areas eSIM. It includes mainland China and other listed Asian destinations, but you should confirm the current coverage list and plan rules at checkout.

Does a China travel eSIM work without a VPN?

Sometimes. Some international travel eSIMs use roaming routes that may provide access to familiar international services without a separate VPN. The result depends on the provider, active plan, roaming route, device, location, temporary network conditions and the service itself.

A travel eSIM is not a VPN. It does not create a VPN account or guarantee that every website and app will work in the same way in every situation. Treat “works without a VPN” as a plan-specific feature to verify, not as a universal promise.

For a more focused explanation of app access, see Does WhatsApp Work in China?. For plan-level app and routing details, check the Ezigo mainland China eSIM product page.

Which apps may work with a China travel eSIM?

Travelers commonly ask about Google Maps, WhatsApp, Gmail, Instagram, Facebook, YouTube, Telegram, Google Translate and other international services. These services may work through an international travel eSIM, but access can change with the plan, route, device settings, app version and local conditions.

Before departure, download offline maps, save hotel and booking information, and test the apps that are essential to your trip. A connection that loads one website does not prove that every app will behave identically.

Can you use eSIM on an iPhone in China?

iPhone compatibility needs a separate check because Apple distinguishes between eSIM use in mainland China and travel eSIM installation while located in mainland China.

Apple’s current guidance is model-specific. For iPhone Air model A3518 and iPhone 17e model A3635 purchased in mainland China, eSIMs from non-mainland-China carriers cannot be installed while the phone is located in mainland China. For other devices, check the device model, purchase region, carrier-lock status and provider instructions before travel. Read Apple’s official guidance for using eSIM with iPhone in China mainland and check your exact model before purchase.

Android compatibility varies by manufacturer, model, purchase market and carrier lock. Check the device settings or the manufacturer’s specifications, then use the provider’s compatibility list as a second check.

Which China eSIM plan should you choose?

Choose by the way you use data, not only by the word “Unlimited.” Ezigo’s mainland China plans use different data models, so the post-cap rule matters as much as the headline allowance.

Plan modelHow the allowance worksAfter high-speed data is usedBetter for
Total DataOne fixed data pool for the selected validity periodThe connection stops when the included total data is exhaustedMaps, messaging, bookings and predictable light-to-heavy travel use
Standard Daily2GB or 3GB of high-speed data per dayUp to 384Kbps until the next reset at midnight China timeTravelers who want a predictable daily allowance
Unlimited1GB of high-speed data per dayUp to 5Mbps until the next reset at midnight China timeVideo calls, streaming, heavier browsing and continued access after the high-speed allowance

All current Ezigo mainland China plans support hotspot sharing. Hotspot traffic uses the same plan allowance as the phone, so laptops, tablets, cloud backups and video streaming can consume data quickly. For a separate explanation of tethering and setup, read the China eSIM hotspot guide.

Ezigo’s China eSIM is data-only. It does not provide a mainland Chinese phone number, standard carrier calls or SMS. You can usually keep your primary SIM active for calls, messages and verification while using the travel eSIM for mobile data, but keep data roaming disabled on the primary line if your home carrier charges for roaming.

How to install and activate a China travel eSIM

Install the eSIM before departure, but use it for mobile data only when you are ready to connect in mainland China. The exact activation trigger depends on the selected plan, so follow the instructions in your order email.

  1. Check the phone. Confirm eSIM support and carrier-unlock status.
  2. Connect to reliable Wi-Fi. Open the QR code or manual activation details before departure.
  3. Add the eSIM. Scan the QR code once, complete the installation and label the line clearly.
  4. Keep the travel line ready. Seeing “No Service” before arrival can be normal for a mainland China-only plan.
  5. Connect after landing. Turn on the China eSIM, select it for mobile data and enable Data Roaming on that line if the plan instructions require it.
  6. Protect the primary line. Keep data roaming off on your home SIM and disable automatic cellular-data switching.

Ezigo APN settings are normally automatic. Do not copy an APN value from an unrelated China eSIM product. If the connection does not work, check the data line, roaming setting and network registration before changing advanced settings. For a broader walkthrough, see the Ezigo eSIM installation guide.

Can you buy or install a China eSIM after arrival?

Do not rely on buying or installing a new travel eSIM after entering mainland China. Some providers restrict new purchases after arrival, and device-specific restrictions may also prevent an overseas eSIM profile from being installed while the phone is located in mainland China.

The safest process is to purchase the plan, check device compatibility and install the eSIM while connected to reliable Wi-Fi before departure. After landing, turn on the travel eSIM, select it for mobile data and enable Data Roaming if required by the provider.

Before you fly: Keep the activation email, QR code, manual activation details and installation instructions available offline. Do not delete the eSIM if it fails to connect until support confirms that it is safe to do so.

What should you do if the China eSIM does not connect?

Most setup problems come from selecting the wrong data line or enabling the wrong roaming setting. Work through these checks in order:

  • Confirm that the China eSIM line is turned on.
  • Confirm that the China eSIM is selected for mobile data.
  • Enable Data Roaming for the travel eSIM if the plan instructions require it.
  • Turn off automatic cellular-data switching.
  • Toggle Airplane Mode briefly, then restart the phone if needed.
  • Leave network selection on Automatic first.
  • Check that the phone is not carrier-locked and that the plan covers mainland China.
  • Contact support with the order number and device model. Do not publish or send an unredacted QR code, ICCID or LPA string in a public channel.
App-specific issue: test another website or map first. A working data connection does not prove that every service will behave identically.

Frequently asked questions about using eSIM in China

Can I use eSIM in China as a tourist?

Yes. Tourists can usually use an international travel eSIM in mainland China if the plan includes mainland China coverage, the phone is unlocked and eSIM-compatible, and the profile is installed before arrival. A travel eSIM is different from activating a local mainland carrier eSIM, which may have separate device, identity-check and carrier requirements.

Can I use eSIM in China without a VPN?

Sometimes. Some international travel eSIMs use roaming routes that may support common international services without a separate VPN. Results vary by plan, route, device and service conditions.

Can I use Google Maps and WhatsApp with a China eSIM?

They may work through an international travel eSIM, but access is not guaranteed for every plan, device or location. Download offline information and verify the services that are essential to your trip.

Is an eSIM the same as a VPN?

No. An eSIM is a digital SIM profile. A VPN is a separate network-routing or privacy tool. A travel eSIM may use a roaming route that makes some services available without a separate VPN, but it does not necessarily include a VPN application.

Can I install a travel eSIM after landing in mainland China?

Do not rely on that. Install the profile before departure while connected to Wi-Fi. Apple’s restriction is model-specific, but installing before travel avoids both device restrictions and possible purchase or delivery problems after arrival.

Does the Ezigo China eSIM include Hong Kong or Macau?

No. The Ezigo mainland China product covers mainland China only. Hong Kong and Macau require separate coverage or a regional plan that explicitly includes them.

Conclusion

Can you use eSIM in China? Yes, when you choose an international travel eSIM, use a compatible unlocked phone, install the profile before arrival and select a plan whose data and routing rules match your trip.

If you only need mobile data for maps, messaging and bookings, a Total plan may be enough. If you want a daily allowance, choose Standard Daily. If continued access after the daily high-speed allowance matters more, compare the Unlimited plan’s 1GB/day rule and up-to-5Mbps continued-use speed. Review the live product details before checkout because plan availability and terms can change.
